EARTHQUAKE EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PLANS
JUST IN CASE - Here are some tips on readiness for disasters and earthquakes:
Make a plan - Have an out-of-state contact person for your family to text and check in if there is an emergency.
Earthquake prep:Secure things that might fall over, like bookshelves, glass on shelves, etc. Check for breakable items on high shelves. Check for heavy picture frames or mirrors over places where people could be.
Everyone: keep closed-toed shoes in your car, keep 3 days worth of water and food per person, 1 gal per person per day, in home, car and workplace. Use bottled water.
Everyone should have a plan with a phone number of out-of-state person to text your info to.
- Texting is best in an emergency, takes the least amount of bandwidth.
- Radio and batteries
- Flashlights and batteries
- Water, 1 gal per person per day for 3 days
- Non-perishable food for 3 days
- Can opener, cooking utensils
- First Aid Kit and manual, need upgrades, 2 kitchens
- Fire extinguishers
- Pipe wrench and crescent/adj wrench
- Pet needs
- Outdoor grill
DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON – under sturdy desk, bench or inside wall. Cover head. Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and wall and large fixtures that could fall.
OUTSIDE – Stay away from buildings, trees, streetlights and utility wires.
DRIVING – Avoid stopping under overpasses, trees, near buildings or utility wires.
IF TRAPPED – Cover mouth with cloth, avoid dust, don’t light a match, tap on pipe to be heard.
Wear shoes for protection.
Check gas, electrical and water lines, water heater and appliances for breaks or leaks.
